The development of the Australian Seating Systems Temporary Access Stairway was driven by the need to provide public access to grandstands and other facilities in a variety of situations and at varying heights. The design criteria to meet safety and regulatory building codes with a flexible, demountable system, has seen the development of the ASS Public Access Stairway.

All understructure is steel and the "3000" temporary stairway system has aluminium step treads.

Grid dimensions of the standard "3000" series are 1.626metre wide x 9 steps of 2.44m and 6 steps of 1.626m.

The amount of egress required is calculated by the numbers of spectators using aisles and access stairs.
Calculations of egress required for safety purposes are based on emergency evacuation principles and are incorporated in the design of grandstands and spectator viewing platforms.
